And let there be… Discus.

Marc September 9th, 2007

Picked up my very first discus from a local breeder. 2 Wild Blues, 1 Blue, and 1 Blue x Violet Reflection. I’ll have some pics up shortly.

125 gallon in the works! (for Discus!)

Marc August 3rd, 2007

Stopped down at the LFS last night and ordered the tank and stand. Picked up two Fluval 405s (rated 100 gallons each!) and “seeding” them in my 55 gallon. I also setup my old Penguin filter (rated ~60g?) on the tank for compensate for the smaller filters I took off for my 10 and 15 gallon tanks. I’m getting about 1000 GPH with the valves lowered on the Fluvals. My fish are lovin’ it!

Next time I get to the store, I’m picking up some sponges to cut into blocks to be placed where the carbon was in the filter. Trying to order some Seachem Fluorite from the LFS to be placed under a layer of sand. I’ve got a NICE dogwood stump I’m going to be soaking in hot water for the next few days. It’s got a whole bunch of roots the Corydoras are going to LOVE swimming in.

Picking it up Tuesday. Can’t wait.

Identified. Kinda.

Well, they’re finally large enough to tell that they’re a Notropis sp. But I moved them into one of my larger tanks and haven’t seen them yet. Time will tell if they’re still around!

And as they grow….

Marc June 12th, 2007

…I still have no idea what these little guys are. They’ve grown alot since I got them, but they’re still unidentifiable. As best as I can tell they appear to be a Characin of sorts, possibly a minnow. They could also be perch or a pickerel - it’s pretty hard to tell. They have a pretty well defined jaw, but it really doesn’t say much when they are of that size.

Local Plants

Marc June 12th, 2007

After breaking out the old boat (a tri-hull older than myself), I decided to take it for a drive in the next town over. I’ve been looking to set-up an entirely native tank, so I was keeping an eye out for any decent sized milfoil, at the very least. It’s basically the Connecticut alternative to stem plants, at least on the Housatonic river. However, I lucked out - there were a TON of little grassy plants floating along the surface of the water! Apparently the fresh offshoots from the parent plants were being swept away whenever one of the larger boats kicked up a large enough wake. Needless to say, I didn’t want to look a gift horse in the mouth and quickly bagged the plants. :D

Let there be fish!

Marc May 29th, 2007

So, the little guys I snagged from the river are not only ALL living, but they’re eating flake - I couldn’t have done this well with aquarium bred fish! It’s really amazing how well the little guys are doing. Now the wait is killing me - I want to find out what they are!

My latest additions…

Marc May 26th, 2007

Coming back from an excursion, I was struck with the desire to go fishing. After a few casts, I noted something swimming just off shore - it was a school of fry! There had to have been well over a hundred of them, just swimming there… all I could think about was that I had no net. However, I did have a foam box - which would work just as well. I scooped them up and managed to get about 20 of them!

After bringing them home, I set up a freshly vacated 5 gallon for them and finally get a chance to really look at them. They are about the size of 2 day old guppy fry, but longer. I’m hoping they will eat flakes so I won’t need to go crazy making BBS or infusoria. They seem to have taken well to their new tank, which, in lacking a sponge filter, I cut a piece of cloth to cover the intake and slow it down. I also put in some hornwort and anacharis, so the water should stay pretty fresh for them.
